The country of Nigeria is so blessed both in human and natural resources but one thing we all agree has been militating against the growth and development of the giant of Africa is corruption.
First of all I will love to start with a simple question, what is corruption?
Corruption is a dishonest, illegal or immoral behaviour especially from someone with power. Corruption means the use of public office for inordinate ambitious private gain, use of public trust in a manner inconsistent with public interest, the use of entrusted power for dishonest private gain, or any form of bribery, forgery, counterfeiting, fraud and other related offences.
Corruption is a crime against humanity. Conventionally corruption is that thing which whenever you are about to do, you always have a guilt feeling deep down somewhere in your mind.
Corruption dates back as far back as man himself when the first sin was committed with Eve giving Adam the forbidding fruit thereby corrupting him (Adam) and the first sin on earth committed out of jealousy with a brother killing his brother and the history of corruption in Nigeria dates back to the pre-colonial era and continued during the Period of Slave Trade and presently in our country Nigeria to, at one time, be the second most corrupt country in the world after Jamaica.
Most corruption issues are motivated by those who believe in the end justifying the means and not the means justifying the end. Corruption is one hydra-headed issues that has the very replicating ability of the virus. Unlike other crimes, corruption can never exist independently in any society. Once the level of corruption in any society increases, the level of other crimes i.e. armed robbery, kidnapping, child abuse, sexual harassment, assassination, thuggery, etc. equally escalates. Corruption can be said to be the engine room for crime because usually corruption is not a conclusive action itself but it instigate a whole lot of other actions. Someone that has a corrupt mind can easily engage in a whole lot of unholy activities like bribery, robbery, thuggery and even murder.
One other ironic thing about corruption is that once it is tolerated it usually turns into a habit and transforms into a characteristics trait. Corruption is one bad character anyone should pray not to have. Because once a person’s mind gets corrupt, all other unholy traits like greed, truancy, selfishness, etc becomes eminent and cannot be easily done away with.
When we talk about corruption in Nigeria, our minds quickly jumps to conclude that only those with political power or in public offices that perpetrates this act, but we all are as guilty as charged, as different election years, we sell our vote/future for peanuts – that is corruption.
It is not late to turn a new leaf as we are in another election year, ensure that you do not sell or allow your vote to be bought by politicians. Vote candidate (credible) of your choice. The youth should not allow themselves to be used to cause trouble. Be an advocate of a violent free election.
Finally, fellow compatriots, let’s all join hands in the war against corruption by voting in a credible candidate. Let the ballot paper be our munitions – machete, guns and grenade.
