The Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Prof. Salihu Sanusi Avidime, has described the bursary initiative of the Kogi State Government, under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, as clear evidence of the administration’s commitment to student welfare across the state.
Prof. Avidime made the remarks in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the institution’s Deputy Rector, Dr. Godwin Ojodomo Onamah, at the flag-off of the bursary disbursement — an intervention designed to ease the financial burden of tertiary education for students in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State, Prof. Avidime commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he called visionary interventions in the education sector, particularly through the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). He noted that both initiatives had continued to support students and institutions, driving access to education, infrastructure development, research, and the broader growth of tertiary education in Nigeria.
He further praised Governor Ododo for translating the President’s education agenda into direct support for Kogi students through the bursary scheme, saying it reflected the governor’s concern for student welfare and his determination to cushion the rising cost of tertiary education.
While the bursary provides direct financial assistance to beneficiaries, Prof. Avidime stressed that its significance extends further, offering relief to students and their families at a time when the cost of education continues to strain many households. “The bursary is more than financial assistance,” he said. “It is an investment in the dreams, aspirations and future of our young people.” He added that supporting students at this critical stage of their academic journey would ease their burden and foster a more conducive environment for learning.
Beyond the bursary, the Rector also commended Governor Ododo’s support for the Governor Ododo All Campus Games, describing it as a deliberate effort to develop students beyond the classroom. He said the programme creates opportunities for talent discovery, while promoting healthy competition, unity, discipline and positive engagement among students across tertiary institutions in the state.
On behalf of the Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State, Prof. Avidime expressed appreciation to Governor Ododo for his interventions and his commitment to the holistic welfare of young people in the state. He specifically acknowledged the administration’s attention to students’ academic, financial, social and sporting needs, and expressed optimism for continued collaboration between the state government and tertiary institutions in advancing education and youth development in Kogi State.
