A downpour in the late evening at the varsity town of Anyigba in Dekina Local government areas of kogi state has thrown the town into mourning as six people lost their life, with many receiving injuries when the road collapsed to the resulting water erosion.

According to the eye witness in the town, the victims met their death in the city at a bend closer to CMML secondary School along Anyigba-Dekina road on tuesday night when they suddenly ran into a powerful water erosion with high tide due to heavy rainfall which started early evening of the day.

A source said five corpses have been pulled out as at thursday so far from the gully created by the lingering erosion at that spot in the town on the said road which terminated into the Ofu rivers.

It is said the search party have been intensifying efforts to get the remaining corpse said to be the sixth victim, even as news were making round in the town that more dead bodies may be pulled out eventually as the incident happened in the night.

It was gathered that besides one late Enema and his cousin who were from Anyigba town, other victims were said to be from adjoining villages that were returning home or getting out of the town as at that time of the downpour.

Late Enema, a popular politician in the town met his death while returning from a nearby town of Abocho with his cousin where they have gone to negotiate for a new date over his wedding plan

It is said the victims’ motorbike was swept off at that point into the resulting gully by the strong erosion current that ensued as a result of the heavy down pour, and discharged him and his cousin into the resulting gully that has gathered strong tide.

The late Enema and his cousin have since been laid to rest on Thursday morning according to the Islamic rites at Anyigba.

According to the residents of the areas of the city, the said killer spot has been there for ages, saying, “it has been killing both people and animals all these years without intervention from the successive administrations in the state”.
