Sen. Dino Melaye says nobody in his convoy exchanged gun shots with any team of policemen on July 19 as being claimed by the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ali Janga.
Melaye , who is representing Kogi West senatorial district in the senate made this clarification in a statement issued  in Lokoja on Saturday by his Special Assistant on media, Mr Gideon Ayodele.
The senator said that nobody in his convoy was carrying gun on that journey except the men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) detailed to provide him security.
“The Kogi State Police Commissioner,  CP Ali Janga is being economical with the truth,  nobody from my convoy exchanged gun shots with the police.
“Police alleged that it was the last vehicle in my convoy that contained security men that shot the policeman. This is a big lie. If it is so , why was it that nobody was arrested ?
“The vehicle they alleged was never shot and why was it that it was my car that was next to civil defence vehicle that was attacked, ” he asked.
He said that he was on his way back from Isanlu on that fateful day when his convoy ran into a team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Iyah-Gbede which suddenly stopped the pilot vehicle carrying the civil defence corps personnel.
“The Police stopped the vehicle of the Civil defence Corps, arrested them and suddenly opened fire on my vehicle including my back up vehicle.
“We all have to run for our dear lives as they continue to shoot at my Jeep and apart from the officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp there was no other security men in my convoy,” he explained.
According to  him, all these happened in spite of an earlier letter he wrote to  the Kogi State Police Command, to inform them of the plan to  tour his constituency to inaugurate some projects.
“My lawyer also wrote them and they acknowledged the letters, “ he said , wondering why the sudden change of behavior by the police.
It will be recalled that Janga, had at a press briefing in Lokoja on July 20 alleged that a gun shot from one of the vehicles in the convoy of the senator hit a policeman on the chest.
He said that the policemen were on stop and search duty when the incident happened and consequently invited Melaye to report himself to the CID to assist police in the investigation of the shooting incident.
