The Federal Government has unveiled plans to set up Nigeria’s first bamboo processing factory in Karara, Kogi State to bolster the production of toothpicks and other related products.
Minister of Environment, Balarebe Lawal, made this known at the commemoration of the 2023 World Bamboo Day in Abuja.
Balarebe said using bamboo in Nigeria will contribute to environmental protection, ecosystem conservation, climate change mitigation, and job creation.
The minister said bamboo not only plays a crucial role in combating climate change, but it also offers opportunities for economic growth and poverty alleviation.
He highlighted the government’s intention to establish improved seedling nurseries crucial for sustaining the bamboo processing project.
“As the whole world grapples with the menace of climate change and its attendant impacts, we are reminded by this event of the immense potential this plant holds in addressing some of these pressing challenges. Its rapid growth, strength, and adaptability make it an ideal solution for sustainable development and resource management,” he said.
