The Tailors Association of Nigeria (TAN) has called on the State Government for assistance in order to continue functioning efficiently.

The Lokoja LG Secretary, Ahmed Abubakar made this known during a courtesy visit to the office of the Commissioner for Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Kogi State.

Abubakar was of the opinion that tailors contribute their own little quota to the State’s gross domestic product (GDP), as evident with the sewing of cloths for persons, living or buried.

“The purpose of our visit is to let you know that we have witnessed what the Administration of H.E, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been doing since coming into office.

“This association has been in existence for several years without any means of slowing down, and our association cuts across the entire state.

“As artisans, our role is huge as we cover the whole world, not just Nigeria. Clothes can’t sow itself, that’s why tailors are everywhere”

He added that they operate well without bias or aggression and that it is not mandatory to be a member, according to the constitution.

Furthermore, they are passionate about carrying out their objectives, but lack the proper inputs to operate:

“One of the challenges we have, is not being able to partake in some of the incentive programs organized by the Government.

“We are the main association as evident by our name, and just like other artisans that are recognized, we need Government’s support in order to function properly.

“This recognition is necessary, as our importance cannot be overemphasized, when it’s time to exercise our franchise.

“In fact, during elections, there is no polling unit you would go to, that you won’t meet at least one tailor.

“Overall, we also need manpower to be able to handle our activities to as much as the law allows us to.”

Responding, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Yunusa Gabriel Olofu appreciated the group for the work they’ve been doing:

“Tailoring is very important. When you take your job seriously, it takes you to places.

“The power of operating a sustainable association lies in your hands. Sit down, increase your numbers, make the association strong.

“We will try to assist you to gain the recognition you so deeply deserved”

Olofu thanked the group and assured them that they will continue to collaborate with business(es) and ensure they receive the necessary support as at when due.
