The member representing Idah Federal Constituency in House of Representatives, Hon David Idris Zacharias on Monday organised seminar for his Legislative Aides at the constituency office, at the National Assembly in Abuja to keep them abreast with the challenges they may face in the course of carrying out their responsibilities.
The seminar, which focused on the functions, duties and responsibilities of those working with him, touched key areas of competence, hard work, integrity, morality, dedication, office ethics, etiquette and professionalism.
The facilitators, who were predominantly from Kogi State with wide working experiences and of the Igala extraction working at the National Assembly, said they took the decision to offer the free lectures to the constituency staff as their contributions to Hon. Zacharias who they eulogised as a simple, humble and respectful legislator.
Leader of the team who has over 18 years work experience at the national Assembly, Barrister Ibrahim Usman, urged the staff to show dedication, give their best to service and ensure that they protect the interest of the Honourable member and the constituency at large.
Barrister Usman whose presentation focused on the core responsibilities of a lawmaker, which he said are Over-sighting, Representation and Law making, said each of the responsibility is key to the development of the constituency, but advised that positive collaboration is the key to making change happen in the constituency.
Speaking further, Usman called on Zacharias to appoint dedicated, hard working and result-oriented individuals to work at the constituency office in Kogi state.
He noted that their functions among other things include interfacing with the constituents, reporting developments within the local governments to the member house of Representatives and ensuring that timely information on issue that require his attention are effectively conveyed to him.
Earlier, Gobina Idris, another member of the team said Legislative Aides are expected to help the Lawmaker carry out their duties more efficiently by assisting in research, administration and communications as he dwelled on the responsibilities of each member of the office.
“You are expected to have strong communication skills and the ability multitask, relate very friendly with the Igala people who come here to see the Honourable member and ensure that you are good image of this office”
“The National Assembly has code of conduct and standing rules, you are expected to keep to all. Breaking any rule amounts to disrespecting constituted authority and projecting your principle in a bad light at the National Assembly”
While appreciating the quality of lecture delivered, the member representing Idah Federal Constituency, Hon. David Idris Zacharias, appreciated the team for finding time to lecture his staff, while assuring them that he would do will that is possible to have a smooth tenure at the assembly.
He reiterated his commitment to change the narratives of legislative representation through effectively projecting the image of Idah Federal constituency and Kogi state at large in the ways of Motions, Bills and carrying out those responsibilities that are attached to his office.
High point of the training was an interactive session, which offered participants the opportunity to ask questions on some important issues that concerns their areas of operations.
