St Augustine’s College @ 60: Kogi Speaker Celebrates With Old Boys

It was a gathering of the creme de la creme as the old boys of the prestigious St Augustine College, Kabba over the weekend celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the college which has provided the platform for many who went through the college to become prominent individuals in the society.
The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Matthew Kolawole though, not one of the old boys took out time to join the old boys to celebrate the achievements of the college in the last 60 years.
Speaking at the event which was held at the college premises, the Speaker, commended the founding fathers of the college for their visionary acumen which have impacted the society at large positively.
According to him, he would have loved to attend the the college during his secondary school days but could not, due to circumstances beyond his control.
He rejoiced with the management, staff,  students and old boys of the college, stressing that as a representative, he has also played his part at improving the educational sector of the constituency.
He said as part of his concerted efforts to reposition the sector, he organized and sponsored Inter secondary School Quiz and Debate competitions; a program he has run for two consecutive times.
There is also the Education Support Program wherein over 350 students benefitted which is also a yearly program.
This is apart from the payment of WAEC, NECO and JAMB fees for over 500 students in the constituency and the 700 students who are currently on his scholarship scheme for various categories.
The Speaker informed the gathering that the sixth assembly is currently working on the bill to provide for the decentralization of the Kogi State University, Anyigba which has passed through the public hearing waiting to be passed into law.
He said the bill is parts of the determination and commitment of the current administration in Kogi State led by Alhaji Yahaya Bello to reposition the education sector as of the thematic areas the administration chose to turned around the state for good
He charged the students to take their studies serious nothing that they cannot attain a meaningful livelihood without qualitative education.
The Speaker who launched the school magazine, promised to continue to collaborate with other relevant stakeholders in promoting the college and the education sector.
The guest speaker, Mr Francis Onaiyekan, admonished the students to face their studies as that is the only way to prepare themselves to be good leaders in the nearest future.
Other dignitaries present at the event include, Bishop Martins Olorunmolu who’s the proprietor of the college,  Major General Emmanuel Abejirin (rtd), Sir Johnson Jimoh, Barr Jaiye Ajayi and others.
