The Kogi State Government has reacted to the death of a Medical Doctor in her employ, Dr Rosemary Chukwudebe, describing the deceased as a hard working staff of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Haruna Audu, the government said it gathered that the deceased doctor had been battling unmentioned health challenges prior to her death.
Audu however said that she was never denied access to health care service even if she was unable to pay.
“As corroborated by the CMD, one of the policies of the hospital is that no staff will be denied access to any health care service within her ability even if she is temporarily unable to pay for it. More so, the Doctor is said to have been battling premorbid health challenges prior to her death of which professional ethics will not permit us to mention.
“The Ministry of Health will collaborate with the family over the burial arrangement as well as ensuring that other areas of assistance by the State Government is given a deserving attention. The entire people of the State will miss her invaluable service,” he said.
Following her death, another medical doctor identified as Dr Idris Nuhu and three other nurses slumped almost simultaneously thus causing confusion at the hospital.
The four medical personnel are now currently on admission at the hospital.
The Secretary, Association of Resident Doctors at Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Dr Moses Adaudi, who confirmed the incident, said the death of the doctor was as a result of lack of Intensive Care Unit at the hospital where she could have been treated.
“There was no oxygen spanner to place her on oxygen and even when she was to undergo some tests, there was no money to carry out the test,” he said.
Some of the health officials who spoke on the incident said the late doctor had difficulty getting her drugs as she was not among those that were paid March salaries last week.
According to them, the other doctor would have collapsed following the shocking news of his colleague, while the nurses may have suffered exhaustion from excess workload as they were said to have been on duty since Saturday due to inadequate manpower.
When contacted, the Kogi State chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Godwin Tijani confirmed the death of the doctor and the collapse of a doctor and three other nurses at the hospital.
He said those that slumped were being attended to and that there are in stable condition.
Dr Tijani said he would not make further comment on the incident until after investigations into the matter.
