Fellow citizens, it gladdens my heart that, we are today celebrating and observing our 19th anniversary as a Democratic state, in this nineteen years we have witness steady growth, improvement and better practice of the tenants of democracy.
May I observe, that democracy may have not necessarily ensured rapid and quick development of affluence but it is, at least the best form of government so far devised that ensures reasonable participation by majority of the people in the means and issues that concern their governance.
Democracy is man’s expansion of freedom and it is synonymous with his progress. Therefore the natural instinct of Man as a governed animal is for democracy and I believe that for this reason, democracy will not only survive but it will spread and it will gather momentum as it spreads.
Our leaders both past and present have sown the seed, we must join hands and water this seed, so it may bear fruits that will benefits the generation yet to come. We must ensure peace, harmony and respect for each others. We should see first ourselves as heirs of Nigeria and co-labourers jointly working for the Nigeria project.
Democracy is not static phenomenon, it is dynamic and must be developed. It must also be consolidated. As we gradually draw to an electioneering year, we must remember that democracy upholds and believe in the outcome of the secret ballot, we should ensure that the election process remain credible and acceptable.
May I also use this medium to commend President Muhammadu Buhari and our amiable Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello for their commitment and resilience in upholding our democratic processes, we have seen how each arm of government is given free hands to operate under your leadership.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Happy Democracy Day!!!
