Chairman, Senate Committee on SDGs, Senator Atai Aidoko Ali said it is misnomer for Nigeria Financial ‎Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to become a tool in the hands of government anti-graft agencies particularly the EFCC which negates its constitutional independence.
Senator Aidoko said he supported the motion for genuine autonomy and independence of NFIU in view of its crucial and highly sensitive roles to control the financial transaction of individuals, groups and organisations.
He said the fight against corruption will be counter productive if EFCC sustain its onslaught by usurping ‎the powers constitutionally required by the agency to function properly.
The federal lawmaker opined that there should be some level of interference the EFCC should not tinker with‎, especially the ones that does not threaten the economy of the country. He said the idea of hijacking the statutory functions of NFIU is in complete contravention of the lay down procedures.
