A grassroot football development initiative for under-16 and Under-25 is set to debut in Idah Federal Constituency.
The tournament is been sponsored by Elder Friday Sani Makama, member representing Igalamela-Odolu state constituency at the Kogi State Assembly.
Speaking in Odolu, his country home, Makama explained that the main aim of the tournament is to introduce grassroot football and to foster unity among the people of Idah federal constituency and Kogi State in general.
He also said the tournament is designed to provide a secure and safe environment for young people to play and socialise with other young people, without the fear of crime, bullying and violence.
He called on other clubs from the other federal constituency to register and participate in the tournament.
“The sole aim is to use the tournament as a tool to enhance community members spiritually, socially, physically, mentally, divert them from away from socially undesirable activities and provide our teaming youths with employment and expose them to the world to see their potentials”, he said.
He called on the participants to play the game by the rules, pointing out that; “we need to adhere to rule as we play, remember we can’t be winners at the same time, if you don’t win now, you may be the winner next years”, he cautioned.
Makama called on wealthy individuals from the area to use their resources in creating employment for our teaming youths and to develop the youths to the best of their abilities and foster a lifelong enjoyment of the game of soccer.
According to him, at the end of the tournament, the winner will get #200,000, while the second and the third placed clubs will get #100,000 and #50,000 respectively and a complete football jersey for all the teams.
His senior legislative aide, Comrade Salisu Isah Umar said, “The tournament will have a big focus on player development as it provides a great opportunity to compete against players from all around the state and impress on the numerous scouts that will be present”.
