As part of measures to address gender imbalance in appointments, the Kogi State government has concluded arrangements to establish Gender Desks in all the ministries, departments and parastatals  in the state.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development,  Mallam Usman Jimoh, disclosed this yesterday at a meeting organized by ActionAid Nigeria in collaboration with Participation Initiative for Behavioural Change in Development (PIBCID), to mark the 2014 Public Service Day.

“We have discovered that there is serious gender imbalance in terms of appointments to political, civil and other public offices and it is to the disadvantage of womenfolk at least, for now”, he said.

Jimoh said out of the 37 permanent secretaries in the state, only three are women, adding that in line with the 35 per cent Affirmative Action, at least 12 of them are supposed to be women.

He called on women to assert what he called their population advantage, presence and competence by vying and competing for positions.

In her speech, the state president of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Mrs Fumilayo Olowosegun, said though the appointments of permanent secretary is based on merit and qualification, the government should be gender sensitive by giving women a special slot.
