The Kogi State government says it has concluded arrangements for the establishment of relief camps in 15 identified sites across nine local government areas prone to flooding in the state.
The state deputy governor, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, disclosed this on Sunday when he briefed Gov. Idris Wada on measures being put in place in anticipation of predicted flooding.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had earlier this year predicted flooding in Kogi and some other states of the federation.
“The nine local government areas where the camps would be sited and identified as flood-prone areas are Lokoja, Kogi, Ajaokuta, Omena, Idah, Ibaji, Igalamela-odolu, Bassa and Ofu,’’ Awoniyi said.
He said the committee was in the process of procuring tents and other items to make life comfortable in the camps.
The deputy governor, who is also chairman of the state’s flood management committee, said relevant agencies like NEMA and SEMA had already been contacted for assistance and support.
Awoniyi also told the governor that there was need for the state government to assist in the areas of water, sanitation and road network.
“As part of efforts to guard against a recurrence of the 2012 flood disaster, the committee has embarked on public enlightenment in different languages to warn residents on the impending flood. The governor has also been scheduled to complement our efforts by making a state-wide broadcast to the people,” he said.
Gov. Wada, in his remarks, commended the committee and agreed with it that the state has the capacity to drastically reduce the impact of the flood on the people.
He promised that the state government would provide all necessary facilities at the 15 relief camps to ensure the comfort of those who would stay there.
