For Senator Sunday Steve Karimi, the unfolding legal controversy surrounding his candidature for the 2027 Kogi West Senatorial election is a defining moment.

His response has been unmistakable: No retreat, no surrender.

In a political environment where legal disputes and electoral controversies often become instruments of contestation, Senator Karimi has chosen to place his confidence in the Nigerian judicial system while insisting that his political journey is far from over.

His declaration that he remains unperturbed, undeterred, and firmly in the race is not merely a political statement. It is an affirmation of his resolve to pursue his legal rights, defend his position, and remain engaged with the democratic process.

A fundamental principle of constitutional democracy is that the judicial process provides avenues for redress. The existence of an appellate system acknowledges that decisions of courts of first instance are subject to review by superior courts. Consequently, an unfavourable judgment does not automatically extinguish a litigant’s right to seek further judicial consideration.

Senator Karimi has made it clear that he intends to pursue all available legal remedies. His position is that the judgment delivered in the suit instituted by Hon. Samuel Bamidele Aro raises substantial legal and evidential questions that deserve appellate scrutiny.

He has specifically questioned the court’s treatment of issues relating to limitation periods in pre-election matters, and the authority responsible for conducting party primaries and determining their outcomes.

These are matters to be tested through appropriate judicial processes, rather than settled through political declarations, public speculation, or media exchanges. The rule of law must be respected, judicial remedies must remain accessible, and every party must be afforded the opportunity to pursue its legitimate claims.

Beyond the courtroom, Senator Karimi has alleged that powerful political interests in Kogi State are uncomfortable with his outspoken stance on governance, accountability, and management of public resources. He believes his current political difficulties are connected to his insistence on speaking truth to power on issues affecting the people of Kogi State.

These allegations represent his interpretation of the political circumstances surrounding the dispute. They also raise broader questions about political tolerance, institutional independence, and the space available for elected representatives to express dissenting views.

In a democratic society, disagreement with those in authority should not be confused with hostility towards government. Constructive criticism, accountability, and responsible representation are legitimate and essential elements of democratic governance.

Political competition must never become a substitute for institutional fairness, just as personal disagreements must never undermine the integrity of democratic institutions. The courts must be allowed to determine the legal dispute on its merits, without intimidation or undue influence from any political quarter.

Another significant aspect of Senator Karimi’s declaration is his reaffirmation of loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He has maintained that his commitment to the President and the party remains intact, describing himself as a committed supporter of the President’s political project in Kogi State.

This is particularly relevant ahead of the 2027 general elections, where questions of party unity, internal democracy, candidate selection, and collective responsibility will continue to attract attention. Both the APC’s internal processes and the judicial determination of pre-election disputes must be allowed to follow their lawful courses.

For Senator Karimi, the immediate challenge is to pursue his legal case while maintaining his political relationships and continuing his responsibilities as the elected representative of Kogi West.

This is a moment that calls for restraint, maturity, and respect for democratic institutions. Political disagreements should not degenerate into personal attacks, hostility, or unnecessary confrontation.

Ultimately, the controversy surrounding Senator Karimi’s candidature extends beyond the political fortunes of one individual. It touches on fundamental questions about internal party democracy, electoral justice, the authority of party structures, and the protection of the rights of aspirants and candidates.

The credibility of democratic institutions depends not only on the judgments they deliver, but also on the confidence citizens have in their independence, fairness, and consistency.

Kogi West deserves a political environment in which disagreements are resolved through lawful institutions, political competition is conducted responsibly, and the interests of the electorate remain central.

The unfolding events may have introduced another chapter into the political history of Kogi West, but the legal questions remain subject to judicial determination.

Senator Sunday Steve Karimi has declared that he is not abandoning his ambition or withdrawing from the contest. He maintains that he will pursue his rights through the Nigerian judicial system and remain committed to the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
