Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) has reconstituted the committee that will organise its 2026/2027 Students’ Union Government (SUG) election, following the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing student executive, the university said in a statement on Friday.
The decision followed a meeting on Thursday, Oct 22, between university management and student representatives, including the Kogi State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Joint Campus Committee (JCC), the SUG, and the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS). Other student leaders and stakeholders also attended.
The groups asked management to restart the union’s democratic process without further delay, the statement said. They raised concerns over the postponement of the election for the 2026/2027 academic session, which began on Oct 18.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman reconstituted the committee in response. Professor A. A. Ameh, the Dean of Student Affairs, was named chairman and is to ensure the election is conducted in an orderly manner under established university procedures, the statement said.
Management also directed the immediate past SUG president, Rilwan Abubakar Obaje, and other members of the 2025/2026 executive to hand over all union and university property in their possession to the university’s Director of Security. The directive was conveyed in a letter dated Oct 23, according to the statement.
The university attributed the delay in holding the election to security concerns arising from an incident on June 11, 2026, in which a student died following an unapproved Final Year Brethren (FYB) celebration. FYB events mark the end of studies for graduating students. Management said it introduced security measures after the incident to safeguard lives, maintain peace and order, and prevent a recurrence.
The statement said the vice-chancellor thanked the outgoing executive for its service to the union and the wider university community and wished its members well in future endeavours.
The statement, signed by Uredo Omale, the university’s Director of Public Affairs, did not give a date for the election.
