The Student Union Government (SUG) of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has passed a vote of absolute confidence on the Rector of the institution, Professor Salihu Sanusi Avidime, praising his progressive and student-centred leadership style.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the SUG President, Comrade Abdulmalik Abdulwahab, the student leadership expressed profound appreciation to the Visitor of the Polytechnic and Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for entrusting the institution’s leadership to Professor Avidime. The union noted that the Rector’s performance and dedication to student welfare have fully justified the governor’s decision.
According to the union, Professor Avidime’s administration has set an exceptional standard through a rare combination of empathy, accessibility, and purposeful action.
The SUG highlighted several key interventions that demonstrate the Rector’s responsiveness to student needs, including the recent reduction of the approved hostel accommodation fee from ₦25,000 to ₦20,000. Describing the ₦5,000 reduction as a considerate gesture, the union stated that the financial relief comes as a welcome intervention for students and their parents amidst current economic conditions.
The statement further commended the management’s efforts toward upgrading infrastructure and academic facilities across the institution’s campuses. Key projects cited include the provision of two electric and solar-powered motorized boreholes, the modernization of the Polytechnic Library, and the procurement of additional computer systems for the annex of the Information Technology and Resource Centre (ITRC) to enhance digital learning.
Regarding accommodation, the SUG acknowledged the ongoing construction of a 124-bed-space hostel at the Itakpe Campus, the remodelling and conversion of Hostel C into a modern two-storey facility, and the ongoing renovation of Hostel A, all aimed at improving student comfort and living conditions.
Reaffirming its unwavering support, the Student Union Government pledged continued cooperation and constructive engagement with the Polytechnic Management as the institution strives toward greater academic excellence, peace, and sustainable development.
The union concluded by expressing appreciation to Governor Ododo for his foresight and offering prayers for the Rector’s continued success in leading the institution.
