Catholic Priest Found Dead in Kogi, Police Say Body Bore Machete Wounds

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro, has been found dead along a roadside in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, after sustaining multiple stab wounds, police say.

Fr. Oyetoro served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Egbe, until his death. His lifeless body was discovered along Church Road in Ajaokuta, according to police.

Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Salihu, said the command received a report that the body of an unidentified man had been found by the roadside along Church Road, Ajaokuta.

Salihu said police operatives who responded to the scene found that the victim had sustained severe machete cuts to the head. The body was taken to ASCL Hospital, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead, before it was deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy.

The victim was later identified as Fr. Opeyemi, of St. Paul Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, in the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to the police spokesperson, the case is currently under investigation, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible. Salihu added that once preliminary investigations are concluded, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further, discreet investigation.
