The Kogi Equity Movement (KEM) has renewed its call for political power in Kogi State to shift to the Yoruba-speaking people of Okun extraction in the 2027 governorship election, describing the poll as a historic opportunity to correct decades of political imbalance in the state.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Arc. Amdii A. Amdii Zaguru, the group said the 2027 election should be viewed beyond the lens of routine political contest, framing it instead as a test of the state’s commitment to fairness and inclusive governance.
“Kogi 2027 is not just about an election. It is about justice, equity, and balance,” Zaguru said, adding that certain zones and communities in the state “have carried the burden of exclusion” for decades. He argued that the Okun people of Kogi West Senatorial District possess “the capacity, the numbers, and the will to provide purposeful leadership” for the state.
Spotlight on Bassa LGA
The Movement singled out Bassa Local Government Area for particular attention, stating that residents there have endured long-standing neglect that a future Okun-led administration would address directly.
“Bassa LGA shall no longer be left behind. Our people have suffered enough. The era of marginalization is over,” the statement read, with KEM pledging that an Okun governorship in 2027 would bring infrastructure, security, jobs, and social services “closer to every forgotten community, including Bassa.”
Call for Broad-Based Support
KEM appealed to stakeholders across Kogi’s three senatorial districts, including political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, women’s organisations, and civil society actors, to rally behind an Okun governorship candidacy in 2027 in the interest of statewide unity and development.
“We believe that a government of equity will heal divisions and accelerate development. Kogi belongs to all of us, and 2027 must be the year we get it right,” Zaguru said.
Next Steps
The group announced plans to begin statewide consultations, grassroots mobilization, and stakeholder engagements in the coming weeks as part of efforts to build support for its position ahead of the 2027 election.
