Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan once made a statement that has continued to define the nature of politics: “There are no permanent enemies in politics, only permanent interests.”

Recent events watched on social media have once again demonstrated the reality of this saying, as prominent political figures from different backgrounds gathered at the call-to-bar ceremony of the daughter of the Kogi State Accountant General and daughter of a key opposition figure in Kogi Central gathered in Abuja.

Among the dignitaries sighted at the event were respected political personalities including His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello former Governor of Kogi State, Hon. Abdullahi Bello (Dollar), Hon. Ahmed Salau Ogembe, and other notable leaders who came together to celebrate a family achievement beyond political differences.

The gathering serves as a reminder that political disagreements are often temporary, while relationships, respect, and shared interests remain important.

Those who follow politicians should understand that political actors can disagree today and work together tomorrow in the interest of their people.

Unfortunately, some supporters take politics too personally, attacking, insulting, and even fighting one another because of their loyalty to politicians who may later reconcile.

Political loyalty should never lead to hatred, violence, or the destruction of friendships and communities.

The greatest lesson is that no politician is worth losing your life, dignity, or future for.

Leaders come and go, parties change alliances, and political calculations evolve. But your education, skills, character, and personal development will remain with you.

Instead of wasting energy fighting over politicians, young people should invest in themselves. Acquire skills, pursue knowledge, build businesses, develop talents, and become useful to society.

A person with skills and integrity will always have opportunities regardless of who is in power.

Politics should be seen as a platform for service, not a reason for division. Support your preferred candidate with respect, but never allow political differences to destroy your relationships or your future.

The wise supporter understands that today’s opponent can become tomorrow’s partner. The wise citizen knows that personal development is the strongest form of empowerment.

Let the recent gathering of Ebira political leaders in Abuja serve as a lesson: politics is a game of interests, but life is bigger than politics.
