Over 200 delegates of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) are set to converge in the Federal Capital Territory on Wednesday for an Emergency Delegates Meeting (EDM), aimed at resolving the association’s lingering leadership crisis.

Over the past two weeks, various stakeholders including members, caucuses, state chairmen, and the Committee of Past Presidents have called on Professor Bala Audu to reverse the recent disqualification of candidates for the forthcoming Annual Delegates Meeting (ADM) and elections.

Observers and members alike have warned that these disqualifications threaten the association’s stability and could lead to a breakdown of order.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Dr. Oreyemi ifedayo the chairman of the chairmen and a delegate emphasized the urgency of the gathering:

“This Emergency Delegates Meeting is convened to address the crisis rocking the association before it snowballs into anarchy. Numerous stakeholders, zones, and members have categorically rejected the illegal disqualification of candidates.

Furthermore, the Committee of Past Presidents has met and resolved that these disqualifications must be reversed to ensure a level playing field where members can freely choose their leaders.

According to our constitution, the Past Presidents serve as the final arbiters regarding constitutional interpretation. Their resolutions are final and are not subject to amendment or alteration.

It is, however, regrettable that the President has disregarded these interventions and appears set on a course that may cause chaos within the association.

Consequently, the membership has resolved to gather in Abuja on April 22, 2026, to scrutinize these issues and forge a decisive path toward restoring peace, unity, and the integrity of our association.”

Dr. Oreyemi ifedayo confirmed that over 200 delegates have already verified their attendance, and all necessary arrangements have been finalized to ensure a successful meeting.

Our correspondent will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses.
