23 Stolen Cows Recovered in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested two suspects over offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, cattle rustling and armed robbery.

The suspects, Yusuf Sanni, 22, and Muhammed Lawal Jauro, 22, were recently paraded at the command’s headquarters in Lokoja by the Kogi State Police Commissioner Bensan Gwana.

The suspects, who operate from a Fulani camp located at Okene area of the state, were alleged to have terrorised residents of Okene, Opella and Auchi for some time now.
The police commissioner said the suspects had on December 6, 2015, conspired and kidnapped a Fulani herdsman, one Haruna Abubakar, 41, alongside his under-aged son while grazing his cattle at Achozie/Okene field.
He said that in an attempt by the victim to escape, the suspects machete him to death and carted away 30 of his cows through bush paths from Achozie/Okene to Ajese-Ipo town in Kwara State.
“Based on information, a team of detectives from State Criminal Investigation Department, Lokoja, and Ajase-Ipo Division, Kwara State, in conjunction with vigilante members, swung into action and apprehended the suspects at Ajese-Ipo village camp,” he said.
He said the suspects confessed to committing the crime during investigation, adding that they sold two of the deceased person’s cows at Ejiba village in Aiyetoro town of Kogi while on their way to Ajese-Ipo.
“They further confessed to be among the notorious and deadly gang kidnapping and robbing innocent travelers around federal prison’s axis of Okene-Auchi road,” he said.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects included 23 cows, two cutlasses, four telephone handsets and cash sum of N2, 020.
The commissioner said efforts were on to apprehend other gang members, adding that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.
In the same vein, the command has also arrested one Nurudeen Nasiru of Eika Ohinze town over his alleged involvement in kidnapping and armed robbery.
The suspect was nabbed by a combined patrol team of Osara police patrol and SCIID personnel along Okene-Lokoja road during a stop-and-search operation.
According to the commissioner, the suspect was spying on a truck that developed a mechanical fault with the intention of robbing the truck’s passengers.
He said that when detectives interrogated the suspect, he confessed to be there in the company of some gang members on their way to Abobo, from Eika, for operations.
 He said that the other gang members have escaped.
Meanwhile, investigation was said to be on with a view to apprehending the fleeing gang members while the arrested suspect will be charged to court.
