Thousands of supporters trooped out across the wards of Mopamuro Local Government Area at the weekend as campaigns officially got underway for the National Assembly election billed for January 2027, rallying behind Hon. Seun Ibigbemi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Yagba Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat.
The rally, which cut across several wards in the council area, drew large turnouts of women and youths who sang, danced, and chanted in support of what has become the rallying cry of the movement — the “Mopamuro Lokan” agenda, a call for the constituency to finally produce its own representative in the National Assembly.
Speaker after speaker used the occasion to voice long-standing grievances over what they described as the sidelining of Mopamuro in Yagba politics over the years, particularly in relation to the House of Representatives seat, which residents say has repeatedly eluded the local government despite its size and political weight within the constituency.
“God Is Involved,” Says Ward 3 Chairman
Speaking at the rally, the Ward 3 Chairman of the party, Hon. Agunsoye Olorunfemi, expressed confidence that the pattern of short-changing Mopamuro would soon be a thing of the past, assuring that the ward was fully mobilised to deliver a one-hundred-percent turnout for Ibigbemi.
He described the emergence of Ibigbemi as the PDP’s candidate as evidence of divine intervention in the affairs of the local government, framing the contest as an effort to reclaim the mandate from what he termed political “Goliaths” who have historically dominated the constituency’s representation.
Olorunfemi further described the candidate as a man of impeccable character, saying he possessed the qualities needed to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Yagba land.
Rally Is “Just the Beginning,” LG Chairman Says
At Ward 9, the Chairman of the party in Mopamuro Local Government, Captain Mike Elere (rtd), told supporters that the rally was merely an awareness campaign, with plans already underway to take the Mopamuro Lokan agenda to every corner of the local government.
Captain Elere urged residents not to be misled by what he called selfish politicians working to undermine the constituency’s long-standing power-rotation arrangement, describing such actions as a threat to the peaceful zoning system that has guided political succession in the district.
Party Chieftain Calls for Unity at the Polls
Also speaking at the event, a chieftain of the party in the local government, Elder Roland, appealed to eligible voters across Mopamuro and the wider Yagba Federal Constituency to entrust their votes to Ibigbemi, expressing confidence that he was ready to deliver the gains of democracy to the people.
The rally forms part of a series of grassroots mobilisation efforts expected to intensify across the constituency as the January 2027 National Assembly election approaches, with the PDP signalling that Mopamuro’s quest for representation will be central to its campaign message.
