MOTION DRAWING THE ATTENTION OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT TO INADEQUATE POWER SUPPLY TO THE EASTERN SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF KOGI STATE.
The Rt. Hon. Speaker and my Distinguished Honourable Colleagues, I wish to draw the attention of the House to inadequate electricity supply to the Eastern Senatorial District of Kogi State. As you all know, the importance of electricity cannot be overemphasized. It promotes businesses, improve social life and enhance socio-economic development of a community.
In recent time, too many businesses in Eastern Senatorial District have fold up and social life gone low owing to poor power supply.
Worried about this ugly situation and in the quest to ameliorate the suffering of the people resulting from this menace, I took it upon myself the task of investigating into possible causes and solutions to the power failure in the area.
Whereas, my investigation review the following among other challenges:
I. The entire network coverage which covers over 240 kilometres was designed to be on 33kv but never received 11kv network on average since inception.
II. The Source that feed Idah, Ayingba and Ejule with distance of over 90 kilometres which has overheads lines of 33kv was run with 35mm Aluminium Conductors which are already weak and prone to danger when eventually the supply improves.
III. The cable size at Itobe Bridge which connects Ajaokuta Transmission Station to Kogi East network is 95mm x 1 core XLPE, which is not enough to carry the entire area due to its maximum carrying capacity.
IV. At inception, the line was meant to carry Anyigba Community alone but later other communities like Idah, Ejule, Dekina and other neighbouring villages were connected to it thereby increase the load.
V. To save the cable and prevent total black out, the Area Office in addition to load management rationing is presently shading 25mw energy evacuating from Ajaokuta Transmission Centre.
Whereas, resolving the current electricity problem and securing the future of the Eastern Senatorial District from total blackout, there is urgent need to attend to the following recommendations as suggested by Ajaokuta Area Office.
1. Creation of a feeder at Aja’egwu which will relieve the existing Anyigba feeder to bring in entire Ankpa District to Ajaokuta Transmission.
2. Installation of booster transformer at Alloma and Ejule to boost supply to Idah and its environs.
3. Replacement of 95mm cable at Itobe bridge with 500mm XLPE cable.
Whereas, Ajaokuta Transmission Station is presently the only viable source of power to the Eastern Senatorial District and there is urgent need to replace the connecting cable at Itobe Bridge to forestall its disconnection.
Premised on the above, I call on this Honourable House agree and resolve as follows:
PRAYERS:
1. That the State Government directs Kogi State Ministry of Rural Development in liaison with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to carry an indebt investigation into the cause of power failure in the Easter Senatorial District in order to proffer lasting solution.
2. That the State Government as a matter of necessity and urgency replace the 95mm cable at Itobe Bridge with 500mm XLPE core to forestall sudden disconnection.
I so moved.
Be it resolved today 13th day of September, 2017.
– Honourable Ododo Moses representing Dekina-Biraidu State Constituency
