Senator Smart Adeyemi yesterday met with leaders of organised Labour in Kogi state to find lasting solution to the 4-weeks old industrial action rocking the state.
Joined by the state Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba, the former Federal lawmaker held discussions with the 7-man delegation of the Labour unions headed by chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Ranti Ojo in Lokoja.
Adeyemi admonished the Labour leaders to continue to dialogue with government as the strike action will not profit the state nor the labour union.
“As a unionist and labour leader myself, I have to take it upon myself to meet with you today, I don’t want you to look at me as a politician but as one of your own in this struggle. We must put the interest of our state first.
“The challenges the state is facing today was caused by corrupt tendencies of previous administrations which has bastardized the civil service in the state. I therefore support the effort of the state government to clean up the mess. I have been appealing to the Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello not to allow the innocent people to suffer in the effort to sanitize the system. We will do all we can to ensure that we find a lasting solution to the crisis,” he said.
Speaking further, Senator Smart said a worker deserves his pay and government has a duty to fight corruption but in doing so the poor innocent must not bear the punishments and pains of the corrupt people.
While addressing the Labour leaders, Achuba commended the Senator for his efforts and commitment towards the peace and stability of the state. He appealed to the labour unions to call off the strike as discussions towards resolution continues.
The leader of the delegation, Comrade Ranti Ojo thanked Senator Smart for his timely intervention. He said the meeting was the first genuine effort by any stakeholder in the state to create an interface between the labour leaders and government.
Ojo assured Senator Smart that the labour unions are willing and ready to dialogue with the state government to resolve all the grey areas.
He called on the state government to look into the demands of the labour unions with a view to addressing them. The labour demanded that the government set up a dialogue team to interface with them.
