The Executive Director of Africa Media Roundtable Initiative (AMRI), Omoluabi Bode Adeyemi has hailed the recent directive by the Inspector General of Police for the immediate withdrawal of policemen attached to entrepreneurs, multinational companies and corporate individuals.
In a press statement, Omoluabi said the directive was timely and coming at a time when insecurity and sundry crimes are at its peak in the country while the security agents are stationed to the privileged few.
“Suffice it to emphatically say that this mind boggling insecurity that has characterised all parts of the nation has a direct nexus with the inadequate number of policemen around the country.
“The IG’s directive will no doubt mark the beginning of a new era where the lives and property of ordinary Nigerians at the remotest parts of this country will enjoy a minimal acceptable level of security and the reign of audacious criminality and open harassment and intimidation of our people brought to barest minimum.
“Beyond this withdrawal, there is urgent need for injection of more able bodied Nigerians into the force to give a boost to the manpower on ground. A situation where only about 360,000 policemen protect over 180m Nigerians to put it mildly, is a drop in the ocean. The obvious security and employment challenges the country is currently facing requires that at least a hundred thousand young and able Nigerians be recruited immediately.  The recruitment exercise will reduce the excruciatingly unbearable unemployment situation and bring down the spate of killings and general insecurity confronting us as a nation.
“It is therefore our urgent appeal to the National Assembly to review upwards the Nigerian Police budget currently awaiting passage to accommodate the urgent need for fresh recruitment.
“Our Executive Director also demands that the directive of the Inspector General of police, unlike similar directives in past that have been observed in the bridge be strictly adhered to the later,” he said.
