Kogi State Ministry of Education has released the names of 27 secondary schools whose principals refused to show up for verification of their students register.
The State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, at a press conference in Lokoja on Thursday, had accused some school principals of smuggling no less than 7,702 ghost students into their register to sabotage the state government’s free education policy.
Jones explained that the authentic register verified by the ministry recorded 15,033 students to benefit from the free West African Examination Council (WAEC) registration fees initiated by Governor Yahaya Bello.
The Commissioner said after the approval of N497million for the payment of the 2023 WAEC examination fees for students enrolled in the state’s public schools by Governor Bello last year, some principals began to smuggle in ghost students into their registers.
