Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, has assured that his administration will continue to maintain peace and tranquility currently being enjoyed in the state.
He said the peace being enjoyed was achieved following proactive security measures taken by his government in the state.
Wada said this at the weekend when he received the Presidential Committee on Peaceful Resolution and Dialogue in the Northern parts of Nigeria in his office. The committee members were in the state on a two-day working visit.
He expressed thanks to President Goodluck Jonathan for his concern and for the deployment of troops to the state when the state were facing serious security challenges.
The governor lauded the setting up of the committee on peaceful resolution and dialogue, adding that with the experience and integrity of the members, suggestions as to how to curb the present security challenges in the state will be arrived at.
Wada, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Yomi Awoniyi, lauded the state of emergency declared in some troubled states in the country, describing the proscription of some religious groups as mutually reinforcing measures and right steps in the right direction towards achieving peace in the country.
The governor, who also described the state as peaceful, said the recent killings and bomb attacks on some religious organisations, financial institutions and the attack on the federal prison in the state by insurgents took the state by surprise.
He urged the committee to examine the law concerning the movement of cattle and herdsmen in the country that has become a major security challenge as recently witnessed in Benue State. He said the crisis has led to the influx of refugees to the state, adding that the crisis in Nasarawa State has also affected Kogi State and the people.
Governor Wada, however, commended security agencies in the state for working beyond their call of duty to ensure peace, adding that the establishment of a security trust fund by the state government is to help improve logistic support to security agencies towards effective service delivery.
