The Kogi State Government has advocated the use of indigenous languages for teaching in primary schools across the country.
Governor Idris Wada, who spoke at the weekend during an event to mark the World Teachers Day in Lokoja, lamented a situation where pupils in primary five cannot read and write.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Yomi Awoniyi, urged teachers to consider the use indigenous languages to teach in schools since, “English language is now becoming difficult to comprehend”.
He said despite dwindling resources, the government remains committed to improved teachers’ welfare, urging them to justify the investment on them by working harder.
Earlier, state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Suleiman Abdullahi called for cooperation between the government and teachers.
