Education remains the greatest investment any government can make, and former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello recognized this early by placing education at the heart of his administration’s development agenda. Rather than making temporary interventions, his government focused on creating lasting educational institutions and modern learning environments that will continue to serve generations of Kogites.
One of the most remarkable achievements of the Bello administration was the expansion of tertiary education in Kogi State. Today, Kogi stands among the few states in Nigeria with approximately three state-owned universities. Significantly, two of these universities were established during Yahaya Bello’s tenure, reflecting his commitment to expanding access to higher education, promoting research, and developing the state’s human capital.
Even more impressive is the fact that one of the newly established universities successfully admitted students, completed academic programmes, and held its first graduation and convocation ceremony before the end of his administration. This demonstrated that these institutions were not merely political announcements or ceremonial projects but functional centres of learning delivering real educational value.
Beyond tertiary education, Yahaya Bello introduced the GYB Model Colleges across Kogi State, an ambitious initiative aimed at providing world-class secondary education in a conducive learning environment. These model schools were designed to raise educational standards, improve academic excellence, and provide students with modern classrooms, science laboratories, libraries, ICT facilities, and quality infrastructure comparable to the best public schools in the country.
His administration also embarked on one of the most extensive basic education infrastructure renewal programmes in the state’s history. Over 100 primary and secondary schools across the three senatorial districts were either newly constructed, comprehensively renovated, or upgraded with modern facilities. These interventions provided safer classrooms, improved learning conditions, enhanced teacher productivity, and restored confidence in public education.
However, the Bello administration understood that quality education is sustained not only by impressive infrastructure but, more importantly, by qualified and motivated educators. In line with this philosophy, the government embarked on one of the largest teacher recruitment exercises in the history of Kogi State by employing over ten thousand teachers across the tertiary, secondary, and primary education sectors. This massive investment in human capital significantly strengthened the state’s educational workforce, reduced the shortage of teachers in public schools, improved the teacher-to-student ratio, and created employment opportunities for thousands of qualified graduates. It was a strategic intervention that ensured the newly built and renovated schools were not merely structures but vibrant centres of learning staffed by competent professionals dedicated to nurturing the next generation of leaders.
The Bello administration understood that quality education is not merely about erecting buildings; it is about creating opportunities, reducing inequality, and empowering young people with the knowledge and skills required to compete in an increasingly global economy. By investing heavily in educational infrastructure, institutional development, and access to quality learning, his government laid a solid foundation for sustainable socio-economic growth.
These achievements reflect a leadership philosophy that viewed education not as an expenditure but as a strategic investment in the future of Kogi State. The universities, model colleges, upgraded schools, and the unprecedented recruitment of teachers remain enduring legacies that continue to shape the lives of thousands of students, strengthen the education sector, and enhance the state’s capacity to produce a skilled and enlightened workforce.
History will remember Yahaya Bello as a leader who understood that while roads connect communities, education transforms lives. His investments in schools, universities, and educational personnel were not simply government projects, they were deliberate investments in the minds, aspirations, and future prosperity of the people of Kogi State. Together, these initiatives stand as lasting monuments to a vision of progress driven by knowledge, opportunity, and human development.
