Senate Committee Lauds Kogi Erosion Control Measures

Members of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Works have described the ongoing construction of embankment at the bank of River Niger to forestall flooding of the Kpata-Kabawa section of Lokoja, and other erosion control measures in the state as very significant environment protection projects in Kogi State.

 

 

The committee also described the embankment and its beautification and tourism components as   landmark projects that had the potential to turn around the economy of the state when completed.

 

Some of the projects and erosion sites visited by members of committee included the embankment of the River Niger at Kabawa, gully erosion site at Felele and channelisation site at the Ganaja junction in Lokoja.

 

 

The leader of the delegation, Senator Tayo Alashoadura, spoke during the committee’s on-the-spot assessment visit of some ongoing projects and erosion sites in the state.

 

 

He stated that the state governor, Capt. Idris Wada, had been laying a solid foundation for an all-round development of the state despite the challenges of funding.

 

 

Alashoadura commended the governor for his efforts in mitigating the impact of erosion and flood in the state.

 

 

Members of the committee urged the governor to ensure the completion of the embankment project in view of its strategic importance in the lives of the people.

 

 

In his response, Wada gave an assurance that the state government would liaise with the committee to deepen the collaboration and explore other areas of support by the Federal Government to fast-track the completion of ongoing erosion control projects in the state.

 

 

The Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Prof. Olugbemiro Jegede, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties, Mr. Ezekiel Obayomi, said the visit by the Senate committee underscored the need for the government at all levels to close ranks in the interest of the people.

 

 

He commended the committee members for the assessment visit and assured that the state government would consider the observations with all the seriousness they deserved.

 

 

Jegede added that Wada was determined to avoid past mistakes in project implementation in his determination to fast-track the development of the state.
