The existence of Nigeria as a republic started immediately after the amalgamation of the Northern Protectorate, Southern Protectorate and Lagos Colony in the year 1914 by the then Colonial Master.
With the aforesaid statement, it’s clear that Nigeria was never a sovereign state from the beginning not until the year 1914.
The amalgamation brought us together regardless of our level of education, cultural heritage, norm, language, religious belief and social level and that’s the beginning of our problem as a nation and the need for restructuring the whole system is important.
Restructuring Nigeria means different thing to different people for different reasons. To me, restructuring Nigeria mean rearrangement and reorganisation of the whole system in Nigeria since the existing structure isn’t working.
The restructuring should be holistic in nature as that will go a long way to address some of our problems as a group of people.
In a real sense, there is need for restructuring in our educational system to favour Hausas and Fulanis; our political system to favour the Igbos, Tivs, Okuns, Idomas, Igalas, Jukuns, Ebiras and other minority ethnic groups; economic structure to favour Yorubas, Hausas, Ijaws, Fulanis and others and so on.
There is need for devolution of power from the centre to its component units because the power vested on the government at the centre is too much hence there is need to give part of the exclusive list to concurrent and/or residual list.
Also, there is need for rotation of political offices at federal, state and local government level in order to bring equity and fairness, promote peaceful co-existence among the people and enhance sense of belonging.
This is my understanding about restructuring Nigeria. I will continue to support the agitation for the actualization of Restructuring Nigeria hence my support for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for 2019 presidential election.
