Police in Kogi State have arrested a man they say was transporting 400 wraps of suspected Indian hemp from Edo State to Abuja, the state police command said Thursday.

Officers from the Akpafa Division stopped the vehicle during a routine stop-and-search operation in the Magongo area of Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area, according to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.

The suspect, identified only as Abdulrahman, was driving a Honda with registration number FST 700 DH, the statement said.

Preliminary investigations indicate he is involved in the sale and distribution of Indian hemp, police said. They said he told investigators that a person known by the alias “Biggy” supplied the consignment in Edo State and that it was meant for buyers in Abuja. He put its value at 3.2 million naira, the statement said.

Police have handed the suspect and the seized items to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and action. The command said it is also trying to identify and arrest “Biggy” and others linked to the consignment, including its intended recipients, to uncover the full supply chain.

Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi commended the officers for their vigilance, the statement said. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, effective stop-and-search operations and cooperation with other agencies to combat drug trafficking and distribution in the state.

The command urged the public to keep providing credible information to help security agencies identify and dismantle criminal networks.
