At the Orientation program organized by the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS), University of Abuja chapter, the Chief Press Secretary to Kogi State Governor, Hon. Mrs Petra Akinti Onyegbule was on hand to deliver a lecture on the Effects of Examination Malpractice.
The CPS expressed her disappointment over the poor arrangement of the event. She said as students, she expected that they should have put more efforts in organizing an event such as this.
Knowing that the students are already aware of the various implications of examination malpractice, she decided to digress a bit to discuss about Mediocrity and the Importance of Values.
Addressing this topic, the Chief Press Secretary stressed that mediocrity is the condition of being mediocre, being ordinary, having only an average degree of quality, skills etc. It means having no standards or living below standards. Mediocrity affects the general performance of an individual, and as students, mediocrity affects their academic performance and their general performance in life. She urged the students to live above mediocrity and imbibed values that speak excellence. These values will be helpful to them both within and outside the school.
“The school environment should be a place where values are strengthened. In a world where survival of the fittest is the rule of the game, only the strong will survive. The strong in this context has nothing to do with strength, it’s about ability to think critically using logic, thinking outside the box. Students should look inward and develop qualities and values that can make them independent and self-reliant”, she admonished.
“Outline your priority and define your friendship, don’t make friends with people who don’t add value to your life”, she added.
The CPS stressed on the habit of working smart and develop crafts that would make them stand out in their respective endeavors.
“As ambassadors of Kogi State, students must discourage mediocrity, not only in academics, but also in the way we relate with people. Let our work speak for us, and our work should portray excellence.
“Kogi State students should imbibe the spirit of excellence by distinguishing themselves and develop attitudes that the state would be proud of. We must all look inward and come up with constructive ideas that can compliment the development drive of this government.
Finally, she thanked the executives of NAKOSS, Abuja for putting the event together, saying that it provided the opportunity to interface with students of Kogi origin who are in institutions outside Kogi State to discuss issues that are essential to the human capital development of our dear state.
While Responding, the association president, Comrade Almaruf Suleiman appreciated the CPS to the governor for being honest with her message and her words of encouragement. He noted that the students have benefited greatly from her lecture, and pledged that they would be worthy ambassadors of the state.
The CPS was later recognized with an Humanitarian Service Icon Award, in recognition of her various humanitarian services across the state.
