Empowering the Youths with 5,000 naira or unreasonable amount is just a mockery and not the solution to eradicating poverty.
Youth empowerment is the outcome by which youth, as change agents, gain the skills to impact their own lives and lives of other individuals, organizations and communities.
To utilize young people’s potential as agents of change requires involving and empowering them in development policies and supporting their participation at all levels.
Some of our politicians/leaders nowadays are taking we the youth for a fool by trying to empower the youth with 5,000 naira or with unreasonable amount as a way of mesmerizing the youths in order to create the impression that they have the interest of the youths at heart in order to ease the way for them to actuallize their political ambition. This is sardonic.
For the youth to prevail the the present economics situation of our country now is beyond empowering them with 5,000 naira, this is because the cost of living now is high and our currency has been devalued. Let’s be realistic, what business can one do with 5,000naira in Nigeria today without winding up or kiss the dust of liquidation in two days
as a result of high cost of living?
It is not right that when youth empowerment is mentioned, people think that it is only the function of the government to empower them. This is not so as you, as an individual, can empower young people around you. There are many ways of empowering the youths to earn a better living instead of fooling the youths 5,000 naira.
Better way can include;
1. Give the youth tools to collaborate and problem solve, brainstorm and reflect. Providing youth with the information and resources necessary for analyzing issues that affect their lives and environments will help them become strong strategists on ways to act as change agents in their communities.
2. Invite the youth to launch a project or idea and support their progress. Support youth in implementing their project once they feel they have come up with a good strategy and support them along the way. Allowing them to
carry out their vision with the encouragement and coaching support will be an empowering experience and let them feel supported in their process.
3. Provision of skill acquisition program with enough equipment. Acquiring useful skills helps young people to problem solve and earn a living. Card designing, plumbing, welding, mechanics, bricklayers, soap making, pastry and baking, computer training etc. are all useful abilities.
Once the youths are trained and empowered with all the necessary tools or equipment to carry out the task on their own is better than empowering them with 5,000 naira or any amount not reasonable to establish a business.
The importance of empowering the youths in a proper way is that:
1. Poverty eradication: Youth empowerment can help reduce the poverty standard of any nation.
2. Crime reduction: Crime is an offensive act against individuals or states. Many people indulge in dirty businesses because they lack empowerment when they were youths. The government has spent a lot in the name of fighting
crime without understanding that the formula or solution is in youth empowerment. If your nation wants to fight crime, it should start with youth empowerment. Many youths take part in illegal activities because they were not empowered morally, academically as well as financially.
3. Employment Creation: This is another importance of youth empowerment. A youth empowered society will not seriously suffer from the problem of unemployment that many nations are battling with in the current time. A skill
empowered youth is a job creator. This is because, from the acquired skill he got through the empowerment gained, he can expand his business and employ more citizens which in return help in solving unemployment challenges in
the country.
4. Good education standard: One of the problems that many nations are facing in their education sector is because the youths are not empowered. But when the youths are empowered, they will support the education sector of their nations.
In Kogi state, we have alot of resources and if not that the past government both federal and the state level are playing politics with Ajaokuta steel company by using it as there campaign promises that they will revive Ajaokuta and you and i know that the money stole by one individual in the past administration under PDP is enough to revive Ajaokuta and Ajaokuta company can employ not less than five hundred thousand workers.
So it is high time we the youths stand against does self interest, selfish and myopic politicians/leaders who only want to use our brains and energy to actualize there political aim while their children are schooling abroad and we the youths that vote them to got victory are still struggling to pay school fees while some of us are withdraw from school for not able to pay school fees, what a pity to we the youth.
I want to use the opportunity to plead with His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Bello Adoza, the governor of our dear Kogi state. Please, we know you as a man in a mission with a vision and you are very optimistic in all your doing, during your campaign you promise to carry about 70% of the youth along if am not mistaking and you have tried alot on that but the youth you carry along now is not up to 70% please we still have countless jobless youths who are graduate like me in the street, please you should not relent your efforts in transforming the life of the youths because we are the leaders of tomorrow.
We the youths we are ready to work that is why we need a job not 5,000 naira or unreasonable amount as empowerment, the 5,000 naira or unreasonable amount should not be regarded as empowerment but it should be regarded as allowance for the youth struggling.
So, I will rest my case here and I believe with this little I have said, the government are more wiser and know what to do.
I want to thank my local government administrator, Hon. Mohammed Abdulrazak for all his effort in supporting His Excellency for making Okene local government one of the most secure and peaceful area and also to one Hon. Usman Abdulrahim, the SA to Okene local government Administrator for his words of courage and advice to the youth. He is a youth that listen to youths and the elders and he has positively touched the lives of so many people financially and morally also he is a gift and blessing to his local government and ebira land may God bless
him more.
