Poor governance is characterized by arbitrary policy making, unaccountable bureaucracies, unenforced or unjust legal systems, the abuse of executive power, a civil society unengaged in public life, and widespread corruption.
Our problem in Nigeria is as stated above “bad governance “
Therefore, to enthrone good governance we urgently need to overhaul the legal and judicial system including the enforcement arm of the government which include the police and the regulatory bodies as against the so much asset and financial recovery drive as it is presently.
We need concerted effort in these areas if we must record success, the Efcc is not enough to battle the corruption in Nigeria, it should be all inclusive
There has to be a fervent, effective, efficient and intelligent collaboration between the enforcement and regulatory agencies which include the National Assembly to perform credible, value driven and transparent oversight functions. Until then we may be running in a circle.
As an index to predict assurance or assured future success in legislative or executive activities we need to elect individuals who has humanity spirit with proven managerial, leadership record and success in his/her personal life endeavors and not voting in people with ability to gather thugs or someone with huge financial capital or just someone with influential associates or because you are around the corridors of powers or ride on some display of temporary loyalty to incumbent power or someone that belong to a particular ethnic or clan
We need credible people with appropriate soft and hard skill set and the required mix of academic background and cognate experience.
Yes, the constitutional requirements for elective position is minimum of first school leaving certification but the responsibilities reposed on those positions are immensely demanding and required deeper or more than as stipulated by the constitution of federal republic of Nigeria.
Finally, we need to understand the boundaries between politicking and governance , therefore I urge our politicians to get to the business of governance and limit the extent of politicking.
Respectfully,
