The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) as appealed to the Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to take the welfare of teachers in the state more seriously.

The unions made the request following myriad of issues affecting the primary education sector in Kogi State.

In a meeting with the Governor of the State, the National President of the union, Mr Micheal Alogba, express the union’s displeasure with the autonomy granted to the local government in the management of primary schools salaries.

The primary schools teachers have in the past reached several agreements without success with previous government on issue affecting them.

The unresolved issue had led to street protests and closed down of primary schools in the state for several months.

But closing down of schools is the last thing in the mind of the union now, as they had chosen to have a conversation with Governor Bello on the way forward.

Reiterating his administration’s commitments to ensuring quality education in the state, the Governor gave reasons behind some of his actions, blaming the state NUT for allowing previous administration play politics with education.

The meeting ended with promises by the Governor to end the problems affecting the teachers in a matter of days, but just like many meetings of its kind that yielded no result in the past, members of the union and indeed teachers in the state are hopeful that this time it would not be empty promises.
