The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kogi State has urged the state government to reconsider its decision to slash the salary of some categories of workers by 40 per cent.
The new state Chairman of NLC, Comrade Onu Edoka, made the call in Lokoja on Friday at the occasion of the celebration of this year’s 2015 Workers’ Day.
Edoka said the celebration of the 2015 May Day was low-key due to the news of the pay cut of the state civil servants from Level 07 and above.
According to him, the announcement by the state governor to slash workers salary by 40 per cent, has dampened the morale of workers in the state. He also urged the state government to overhaul the state Pension Board and appoint competent hands to address the numerous problems of pensioners in the state.
The chairman regretted that funds being remitted to the board on a monthly basis were not properly utilized as scores of pensioners who retired over the years, had yet to receive their gratuity and pension.
In his remarks, the state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state, Abdulazeez Ganiyu, said the union was strongly behind the struggle for financial autonomy for the Judiciary. “There cannot be enduring peace and unity without observance of the rule of law and the rule of law cannot be guaranteed without independence of Judiciary,” he said.
In a message to workers, the state governor, Capt. Idris Wada, represented by the Head of Service, Dr Moses Atakpa, commended the NLC for its resilience and peaceful disposition in pursuing union matters.
Wada assured workers that government would address the problems of civilservants to ensure a result-oriented civil service. He commended the cordial relationship between labour and government in the state.
