The Executive Director of Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR), Comrade Idris Miliki has faulted the award conferred on Governor Yahaya Bello by the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS).

In a statement issued in Lokoja on Wednesday, Miliki said women constitute about fifty one percent of Kogi state population and the current yardstick for celebration in the state is mere tokenism – making only a perfunctory effort by recruiting a small number of women who are clearly under-represented in order to give the appearance of gender equality.

“We reject tokenism for Kogi state women.

“The kangaroo local government councils election conducted in Kogi state on the 12th December, 2020 that produced women as vice chairmen across the 21 LGAs and few councillors that is being celebrated is shameful and unnecessary.

“What is the rational for the celebration of undemocratic processes that produces this tokenism?

“As at today in Kogi state, the governor and his deputy are men, the three senators are men, 9 members of the federal House of Representatives are men, the entire 25 members of the State House of Assembly are men.

“Women are human beings and can not be treated like second class citizens,” he said.

The NCWS in collaboration with Global Gold Consult had on January 16 conferred the award on Governor Bello as the most gender-sensitive governor in Nigeria.

The Kogi governor was decorated as a “HE 4 SHE” of Nigerian women, which bestowed on him the honour of a goodwill Ambassador.

The nomination, according to the organisers, is “in recognition of the purposeful and conscious effort of his government to place women in sensitive and strategic positions in the governance structure of Kogi state.”
