The Nigerian Navy has denied molesting voters during the March 28 Presidential election.
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jubrin, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday that the Navy only provided back-up security to the police on the day of the election in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The Navy chief, who was represented by the Chief of Training and Operations at the Naval Headquarters, Rear Adm. Obiora Medani, faulted media reports that the Navy participated in the harassment of voters on the day of the Presidential election.
He stressed that the claims against the Navy, made by the Igala Youths Forum, was untrue, adding that the Navy had to respond to the issue because of the integrity of the service.
Medani said the Naval authorities had investigated the allegation and found the allegations to be false and baseless.
He insisted that the Naval personnel on duty did not go beyond their brief to provide the requisite security as provided for by the law to the police.
He said, “We have investigated the case but there is no foundation to the allegation as reported; the personnel of the Nigerian Navy never deviated from their role of providing security back-up for the police.
“The security arrangement was strict and the instructions given quite clear.”
