If after 90 days a bill is not signed to law by the President, the National Assembly is supposed to retrieve it and work on it. If it can still get two-third endorsement, it automatically becomes law without president assent. What are the legislative arms doing since?
NYSC has lost its repute as it does not guarantee you getting job. Connections determine your chances of getting good job.
It has little effect on your life after school. My people, our politicians, CEOs don’t need it. In Nigeria today, you only need evidence that you attended secondary school, no necessarily bagging SSCE certificate, to become governor or president. Imagine!
Nothing less than 30,000 students are being matriculated by National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) per year. Adding the budget of these students to the existing ones will skyrocket the existing budget.
People’s interest in NYSC rose on hearing that the monthly allowance of corp members will be increased to N50,000.
Mind you, some corp members will be crying when Passing Out Parade day is nearer as they know they have to go and beg for 20,000 or lesser pay job, if available.
I consider it as suffering for a country that only celebrate you not till you are dead in the service especially during election and other violence that may occur. I won’t like to mention instances.
In labour market, NYSC certificate, exemption and exclusion are still acceptable as legal documents. I think the Federal Government should make NYSC a voluntary and not a compulsory scheme. If we ask those that have participated in the scheme, over seventy percent will prefer it being scraped.
These and many more are my views about the scheme.
Thanks for your time.
