When I hear people argue about the current recall initiated against Senator Dino Melaye of Kogi State, I just laugh at the idea. Though many are against the man, there are many others who are just interested in seeing that aspect of our constitution put to the test.
Can a legislator really be recalled? My answer is “yes,” even in Nigeria it is possible, the constitution allows it. But what is not possible is for Dino Melaye to be recalled. You see, Melaye is not just a senator, he is a super senator. After the Speaker, in the order of importance, the next in line is him – don’t ask me how.
So when some say that he would be removed by mere signatures submitted to INEC, I chuckle. Even if the law guarantees it, you will need more than that to unseat such a man.
I won’t be surprised to see a new clause in the constitution soon.
