A commercial motorist, Mr. Samuel Emmanuel, has been arrested for attempting to kill an official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Kogi State.
It was learnt that the motorist committed the offence on the Lokoja- Ajaokuta Road when he refused to obey the FRSC official’s order to stop for offences bordering on overloading and using plastic number plate.
The driver, who was said to have stopped momentarily at the middle of the road, decided to speed off when he noticed that a road marshal was already standing in front of his vehicle, a Nissan taxi marked FCT XC 950 KUJ.
The road marshal was said to have escaped narrowly by jumping on the bonnet and clinging to door frames of the vehicle.
Emmanuel was alleged to have refused to stop and decided to drag the road marshal to Fen Junction area on Old Kabba-Okene Road, a distance of about 20 kilometres to the spot where he refused the order. The suspect was, however, overpowered with the help of traffic wardens and other members of the public at the junction.
The driver was then taken to the FRSC office where the vehicle and its particulars were impounded.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Olakunle Motajo, confirmed the incident, adding that the driver had been handed over to the police for prosecution. The driver is to appear in court today for attempted murder, dangerous driving and overloading.
Motajo pointed out that the decision to prosecute the driver was to serve as a deterrent to others.
He recalled the case of a road marshal killed by a hit-and-run driver during the last Easter period, noting that the driver responsible for the killing is still at large.
