Kwara Assembly and Ministry Salutes Smart Adeyemi’s Hotel on Drainage Construction

The Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Energy, Works & Transport has commended the proprietor of Royal Shekinah Grand Suites, Senator Smart Adeyemi, for his enormous investments in Kwara State and his initiative to beautify the canal around Atikeke Community.

Sequel to the protest by residents of Atikeke community against the proposed beautification of the canal, the Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Energy, Works & Transport and the Ministry of Works and Transport met with the management of Senator Smart Adeyemi’s popular hotel, Royal Shekinah Grand Suites and representative of Atikeke community.

The Atikeke community members complained that the management of the hotel refused to remove a centre wall, which they said was obstructing free flow of water through the canal along Atikeke community.

The House Committee and Ministry of Works visited the hotel to inspect work done on the disputed canal and commended the management’s initiative to beautify the area.

The meeting between the House, Ministry of Works and Atikeke community however agreed that the consultant engaged by Royal Shekinah Grand Suites should re-design the drainage with the objective of removing the middle wall strip which constitute impediment to free flow flood water. The removal will reduce the double cells drainage to a single cell channel

Disputed divide

The management of the hotel was mandated to always clean the upstream and downstream ends of their entrance after completion.

The consultant assured the meeting that he will carry out work on the canal as agreed and will extend the construction of the retaining walls to connect the double box culvert that links Abdulsalam Alao Street. Slab deck will be provided on the canal to provide the necessary aesthetics.

The State Government through the Ministry of Environment and tourism was advised to embark on retraining and channelization of the course of water flood at the stream end towards the NNPC Fuel Station for free flow of water.

The Kwara State Town Planning and Development Authority was mandated to monitor and ensure they take charge of the setbacks adequately for approval of any structure.
