The Vice Chancellor, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Professor Hassan Isah has described the institution as one of the best in the country, in spite of the recent webometric assessment by some organisations in the country, which placed it below the ladder.

According to Professor Isah, the university belongs to ‘Category A’ in the comity of universities in Nigeria, against the background of recent programmes and institutional accreditations by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), as published on their website.

He debunked the assertion that the ranking was released by the NUC, saying that the commission does not carry out any ranking.

He pointed out that, what it only does from time to time was accreditation of programmes and institutional accreditation of universities.

The VC who spoke at 2014/2015 matriculation further highlighted that following accreditation visits, the NUC usually inform stakeholders of the outcome through a number of ways such as a written communication to the Vice Chancellor of the university concerned.

The Vice Chancellor noted that the NUC communicates outcome of the exercise, either to the Visitor to the University, publishes it on their Monday Bulletins and publication or post it on their websites.

He told the gathering that there are no programmes with denied accreditation in Kogi State University and that 75 percent of all programmes have full accreditation status, and that any university with 70% or more of its programmes on full accreditation belongs to category A.

The Kogi State University, he added, scored 71.45% in the first institutional accreditation conducted in 2011, which represents an ‘A’ status and is valid for seven years. He said the university was 1st among state universities and 7th among 26 universities that participated.

Professor Isah stated that the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in August 2014 also conducted its own accreditation visitation to the university to assess its accounting programme at the end of which Kogi State University scored 76%, which represents another ‘A’ status.

He therefore assured parents and guardians of students of the university and the students themselves that the institution was in good hands and in a healthy academic status among universities in Nigeria.

Meanwhile the university has matriculated 4, 396 students for the 2014/2015 session.

A breakdown shows that 394 were given admission in the Faculty of Agriculture; Faculty of Arts and Humanities, 679; 806 students got into Faculty of Education; Faculty of Law admitted 84; Management Sciences 779; and 42 for Faculty of Medicine.

Others are Faculties of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. The Natural sciences admitted 615 students while Social Sciences had the highest number of admitted students at 997.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Hassan Isah charged the students to be of good behaviour, adding that they should not be carried away by the euphoria of the new environment.

He assured them that the university would continue to encourage hard working and serious-minded students.

According to him, for the new students to be worthy ambassadors of the university, they must shun social vices such as cultism, examination malpractices and sexual harassment, drug abuse and others as the school has zero tolerance for those who engage in them.

He stressed the need for the newly admitted students to obey the guidelines set by the school management, adding that the management would not hesitate to wield the big stick on any of them found flouting the institution’s laws.
