Koton-Karfe Student Union (KSU), on Friday, conferred an award of excellence on the Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Umar Ahmed Imam, for being an Icon of Societal Transformation.
In a speech by the President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Hamzat, the student group decided to honour the Speaker on the basis of his selfless service to humanity and people oriented programmes.
“This umbrella body has students population of over one hundred and twenty thousand (120,000) which cut across Nigeria higher institutions and even some are in diaspora undergoing one form of degree programmes and the other.
Sir, with regards to your esteemed office, the students union body sometimes, four months ago constituted an assessment committee in order to assess the political leaders currently holding offices and the past ones, in Lokoja Koto Federal constituency, the outcome of the assessment revealed that the person worthy of the award of excellence is no any other person but Rt. Hon Umar Ahmed Imam, the Speaker Kogi State House of Assembly.
“The award of excellence is conferred on you today on the basis of your selfless service to humanity and your people oriented programmes. It is also a confirmation of the fact that a golden fish has no hiding place and that globally celebrated leaders are not being remembered on the basis of number of structures and edifies built but history remember them for their impact on humanity based on the issue of global interest. Rt. Hon Umar Ahmed Imam, you are one of such leaders.
“Sir, this body wish to congratulate you for putting up skills acquisition and empowerment programme where so many members of your constituency have benefited from this kind gesture. I want to categorically state here, that you have been known for assisting people when you were in the core civil service. You have at several occasions given scholarship to students whose parents cannot afford to pay their school fees as well as helping people to secure employment both at private and public sectors. Your generosity is unequalled because touching life has been your priority.
In his response, the Speaker, while welcoming the student body to his residence, appreciated their kind gesture for finding him worthy of the award.
He said what matters to him is “service to our people through partnership with the executive to bring about good governance to the people that matters”.
He further said “our people need to be best served given a lot of deficit in infrastructure particularly, in human development” and went on to say “The people will enjoy maximum benefit of their actions and activities when they are done” and that is what matters to him most he emphasized.
He promised to continue to do his best in providing quality representation to the people of Kogi State given his position as the Speaker of the State Assembly. He charged them to take their studies serious and strive to be the change that they wish for.
In a related development, the Speaker was also conferred with an award of Excellence in Humanitarian Service at the installation ceremony of the 33rd President of the Rotary Club of Lokoja, District 9125, Nigeria, Rotarian Bala Isah Bala held at Miami Hotels, Lokoja same day.
