Two thousand, five hundred and sixty eight teachers and education managers in Kogi State will be trained in English language and Social Studies by the state’s Universal Basic Education in collaboration with the Federal College of Education, Okene.
The workshop coordinator and director, Centre for Continuing Education, Federal College of Education, Okene, Musa Mallam Jibrin, disclosed this in Okene during the 2012 professional development training organized by UBEC and Kogi State Universal Basic Education in collaboration with FCE Okene.
He said the training will expose teachers and education managers to innovative approaches to the teaching of English language and Social Studies in primary schools, adding that care givers in UBE primary schools and Early Child Development (ECD) centers will be trained on key household practices.
“Out of the total number, 932 primary school teachers will be trained on the basic of English language, while 904 will also be trained in Social Studies”, he said.
In his speech, the Kogi State SUBEB chairman, Alhaji Usman Jibril, said there is acute shortage of qualified teachers in the school system, while the few qualified ones have not received any form of training since they graduated from school.
According to him, in order to ensure the objective of achieving quality education at all levels, it is expedient to put in place a systemic and well placed programme that will ensure that all teachers are regularly trained and re- trained.
