A lawmaker at the Kogi State House of Assembly, Henry Ojuola, Tuesday presented a bill seeking to prohibit formation and membership of cult groups in institutions of learning.
Ojuola, who is representing Yagba-East constituency, said when passed, the bill would empower governing councils of institutions as well as school authorities to conduct investigations into allegations of cult activities.
According to him, the bill would also empower the authorities to proscribe unlawful societies and take disciplinary actions against students and other persons who contravene the provisions of the law.
Members in their various contributions described the bill as timely in view of reported killings at the Kogi State University, Anyigba, over alleged rivalry among cult groups.
After a debate on the bill, Speaker of the House, Alhaji Momoh-Jimoh Lawal, mandated the Committees on Peace and Security and that of Judiciary to work on it and present their report within one week.
