Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has applauded the organized labor for their “show of patriotism” in supporting the ongoing staff verification exercise in the state, saying his administration will reciprocate labor’s gesture by repositioning the civil service for efficiency.
The Governor stated this through his spokesman, Kingsley Fanwo while reacting to a truce between government and labor on the need to give the Staff Screening Appeal Committee an extension of three weeks to put up theirs report which he said “will redefine the future of the engine room of governance”.
The Staff Verification Appeal Committee was expected to submit their reports on the last day of March 2017. Senior officials of the administration have been interfacing with the Committee to see if they could meet the deadline as promised by government.
He said: “Governance is a serious business and we must constantly carry the people along and thrust the common good at the center of every decision of government. Our administration believe staff verification will expose those who have been cheating our state, our people, by using ghost workers as conduits to siphon billions of naira that would have gone into building schools and better hospitals for our people.
“We thank the civil servants and labor leaders for their cooperation and understanding. They know the reality on ground because they are a part of the process that has been credible and fair. We had to battle with more complainants who believe the Committee possesses the credibility to listen to their complaints and give them justice.
Some complaints were affected by screening exercises conducted by previous administrations and we want to listen to every complaints because future destinies are involved”.
The Governor said his government will continue to push the Committee to do a credible and reliable job in order not to jeopardize the careers of the state’s civil servants, assuring labor that his administration will take “far reaching, human face decisions to save government treasury and protect the economic wallets of homes”.
It would be recalled that a government delegation made up of the Deputy Governor of the State, Elder Simon Achuba, Acting Head of Service, Mrs H.O.K. Lawal also and the Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Engr Abubakar Ohere met with labor leader to compare notes on the progress of work by the Committee.
