The people of Orokere Effo-Amuro, on Friday July 7, celebrated their new yam festival in a grand style with divers interesting activities to mark the day.
Activities such as cultural dance, eating and drinking competition, Yagba dialect competition, among others were lined up for the day.
The peak of the activities was the unveiling and eating of the new yam by Oba Jacob Ajayi Mejedi, the Ajugbonjagun of Orokere Amuro, and his Council of Chiefs.
The royal father commended the organisers (Orokere Students Association in collaboration with Orokere Development Association) for their efforts in making the annual festival a remarkable success.
The monarch promised that the Council of Chiefs would continue to give their unalloyed and unflinching support to the associations.
Mrs Ifedun Alice Adebayo, a daughter of the land and one of the special guest of honour, who traveled from far away Lagos to grace the occasion, also eulogised the association for their determination and commitment to making sure that the new yam festival became a reality.
She enjoined the people to eschew all forms of violence and hatred, and embrace peace and unity that would engender rapid development in Amuro land.
She also urged the youths to develop keen interest in agriculture rather than waiting for government jobs and salaries that were not forthcoming.
Hon Segun Arogbonlo, the Secretary Mopa-Amuro, LGA, said that the new yam festival served as an avenue and a platform to unite the sons and daughters of Amuro land particularly the people of Orokere, adding that this year’s festival witnessed a huge turnout than the previous ones.
He thanked the people for supporting the new direction government, led by His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, urging them to continue to support government’s policies and programs.
He, however, advised the youths to take advantage of the numerous intervention and agricultural empowerment programmes that have been put in place by the government to improve their wellbeing.
The President of Orokere Students’ Association Comrade Temmy Anjorin, commended his executive members and members of the organising committee for their doggedness and commitment in making the yam festival a remarkable success.
The festival was rounded up by eating and drinking competition where four contestants battled to finish a mountain of pounded yam each under some specified stringent conditions.
